GRAMADACH 2
Forainmneacha Réamfhoclacha: ‘ar’ agus ‘ag’
Cuimhnigh!
• We use prepositional pronouns (forainmneacha réamfhoclacha) when a preposition (e.g. on, at) and a pronoun (e.g. me, you) come together.
• In English, two words are used, e.g. ‘on them’ or ‘at me’. However, in Irish we combine the two words to form one word, e.g. orthu (ar + iad) or agam (ag + mé).
• There are some other meanings to ‘orm, ort…’ too, but most often they mean ‘on me, on you…’.
• We use ‘orm, ort…’ to express feelings too, e.g. I am happy, I am sad. (There is a happiness or sadness on me.)
• Sometimes ‘agam, agat…’ have different meanings and uses, but often they just mean ‘I have, you have’.
• Like many other European languages, Irish uses the order I–you–he–she–we– you (plural)–they.
