Les verbes As you learn French, you will meet lots of verbs. Verbs are needed to form sentences. Verbs are action words (e.g. play, run, jump).
For example: Je regarde la télévision. I watch the television.
French verbs have one of three endings in their infinitive (basic) form:
• ‘er’ (e.g. aimer, to love) • ‘ir’ (e.g. finir, to finish) • ‘re’ (e.g. vendre, to sell)
Most French verbs follow rules based on their endings – these are called regular verbs. Some verbs do not follow these rules – these are called irregular verbs. You will learn more about regular and irregular verbs in later chapters.
