The first Fête de la Musique was held in Paris in 1982 with the aim of bringing music to the public. Since then, the festival has spread throughout France and to cities around the world.
On 21 June every year, professional and amateur singers (les chanteurs / chanteuses) and bands (les groupes) perform on street corners, in train stations, cafés and restaurants, as well as in music venues.
Every genre of music is represented, from traditional (la musique tradionnelle), classical (la musique classique) and jazz (le jazz) to hip hop (le hip-hop), rock (le rock), pop (le pop) and electronic music (la musique électronique).
All of the concerts are free and many French teenagers attend the celebration with their friends.
