Comics (les bandes dessinées, shortened to les BD) are very popular in France among teens (les ados) and adults.
Classics such as Astérix and Les Aventures de Tintin are still widely read and comics commonly make it on to France’s bestseller list. Titeuf – all about a young boy’s life – now sells over one million copies per issue and has been made into a video game, a TV series and a film.
Every January, the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée is held in the southwestern city of Angoulême and is attended by over 200,000 comic fans. The festival gives visitors the chance to meet their favourite artists and encourages young people to get involved with the world of comic books.
A Fête de la Bande
Dessinée now takes place in Dublin, during which Irish and French cartoonists give talks and exhibit their work.
