In chapter 4, you met the irregular verb faire (to make/do). This is the verb that is used to ask what the weather is like in French: Quel temps fait-il ?
For some types of weather, the reply also makes use of the verb faire.
Il fait froid Il fait mauvais Il fait chaud Some types of weather are described using the phrase Il y a.
Il y a des nuages Il y a du soleil
To describe other types of weather, you simply begin with Il. (This is because geler, neiger and pleuvoir are verbs.)

In France, bad weather is often described as un temps de chien (weather of a dog) and freezing weather as froid de canard (duck cold)!
