Gladiator fighting was extremely popular in Ancient Rome. Male and female gladiators used weapons like swords, shields, nets and spears to fight other gladiators and animals like lions.
To find out more about the training of a gladiator, go onto YouTube and look up ‘Guide to Gladiator Fight Training – BBC History’ (3.59). Now imagine that you witnessed a real gladiator fight. Write a review of that fight. Your article must be factually correct (use the correct historical terms) but you can use your imagination to help you fill in the details, e.g. make up the names of the gladiators.
Consider the following: ●● What type of language will you use? You are a Roman journalist so will that change the way you write? ●● What will the tone of your article be? Will you be excited? Repulsed? Scared? Bored? ●● Set the scene – what can you see, hear and smell? ●● Describe the event. Use descriptive language. ●● What happened? Who won?
