THE PARLIAMENTARY TRADITION IN IRISH POLITICS – DANIEL O’CONNELL AND C. S. PARNELL O’Shea–Parnell Divorce Case
In 1887, Parnell’s career was at a high, but soon afterwards he was involved in a scandal so shocking that it ruined his career. In 1889, William O’Shea filed for divorce from his wife Katherine. O’Shea claimed that his wife had been having an affair with Parnell. O’Shea had been aware of the affair for years (Katherine was the mother of Parnell’s three children). Once the case became public, Parnell lost many supporters in Ireland and England and there were calls for his resignation.
