Passengers need to arrive at the airport in plenty of time for their flight. The building they go to at the airport is called the terminal. In some airports there is one main terminal. In other airports there are different terminals for different destinations. Inside each terminal, there is a departures area where there are many check-in desks. There is a different check-in desk for each destination and each airline.


Checkin At the airline check-in desk, passengers must show their tickets and sometimes their passports. Each passenger is then given a boarding pass. At the same time, passengers check in their heavy suitcases or bags. Each bag is weighed and tagged and placed on a conveyor belt. The tags carry the flight code number and the airport destination. The conveyor belt takes all the baggage to the baggage handling area. Here, baggage handlers pack the pieces of baggage into containers and transport them to the aircraft.


Many travellers today prefer to check in on-line. They are issued their boarding passes in the comfort of their own homes and are able to avoid queues at the airport. There are also self-service check-in points at the airport, again designed to avoid long queuing.


Security After check-in, passengers have to go through security checks. This means that they walk through a metal detector frame, which detects anything made of metal, from coins and keys to hospital pins and plates attached to bones. If guns, knives or explosives are detected, these are confiscated immediately and the passenger is taken aside for questioning. X-ray machines are used to check hand luggage. Passengers are advised to bring only what they need in their hand luggage. The remainder should go in their check-in luggage. The hand luggage is checked by electronic equipment and may also be subject to a hand search.


Containers of liquids such as shampoo, water, gels, etc, must not hold more than 100 millilitres if they are to be taken on board as hand luggage. These liquids must be placed in transparent, resealable bags, for ease of inspection.
