1. Talk about the Olympic Games. Name some Irish Olympic athletes. 2. Have you watched any of the events? Which did you think was the most exciting?
Ancienttimes The Greeks of ancient times worshipped many gods. The greatest of their gods was Zeus and every four years the Greeks held an athletics festival in his honour at Olympia. The first recorded Olympic Games were held in 776BC. There was just one event, the stade race, run over a distance of nearly 200 metres. The first Olympic champion was a cook. Over time, other events were introduced, including jumping, wrestling, chariot-racing, and spear and discus throwing. During the period of the games a sacred truce was proclaimed throughout Greece. Nothing, not even war, was allowed to interfere with the celebration of the Games. The Greeks believed that the Games were as much a religious as a sporting festival, and two days were devoted to religious ceremonies. The prize for an Olympic champion was not a gold medal as it is today, but a wreath of olive leaves. Success brought instant fame to the athlete.
