You will need: • Acorns • A basin of water • Flowerpots • Small stones • A mixture of soil and potting compost
1. Test your acorns. Carefully remove the ‘cup’ from each acorn and put the acorns in a basin of water. Some acorns will sink to the
bottom while others will float on the water’s surface. The heavier, healthier acorns sink to the bottom. These are the ones to plant.
2. Place the small stones at the bottom of each flowerpot for drainage. Fill each pot with the mixture of soil and potting
compost. Make one hole in each pot of soil about 5cm deep. 3. Put one acorn into each hole and cover it with soil.
4. Place the pots outside in winter, where they will not be disturbed. Make sure the soil is kept moist and that the pots get enough sunshine in spring.
5. In spring, the shoot of the young tree will appear. Keep the tree in the pot for two years. Make sure that you water it regularly.
6. After two years, plant the tree outside. This must be done between the months of November and March.
