The grid below is made up of rows and columns. The columns are represented by a letter and the rows are represented by a number. To work out what each square is called, first check to see what column it is in and then the row. For example, the red square is in column A and row 5, so that square is called A5.

Battleship is a famous game that is played on a grid. Each player draws a grid and places their ships on it without the other person seeing. A battleship takes up 4 squares, a frigate 3 squares and a submarine 2 squares. You then take it in turns to call out squares (A5, G8, etc.) to see if you can find where the other person has hidden their ships. The first person to find all of the other person’s squares wins.
