Facilitating versatility As the aerospace industry becomes increasingly complex, manufacturers are responding by offering greater versatility through their operations. In practice, this means that machining specialists can respond to a wide range of requirements – including the ability to machine a variety of metals, including steel, aluminum alloys, exotic alloys, and titanium.


While this flexibility allows manufacturers to respond to almost any challenge, it requires a highly effective soluble metalworking coolant that works well across the broad spectrum of materials and processes such as turning, drilling, milling, and grinding. Having a single emulsion that works well across different surfaces and machining requirements which can be used in multiple machines, can be highly efficient and advantageous for the manufacturer. Proper knowledge and experience in designing and concocting these fluids by the supplier is critical to the operation.


In addition to the emulsion stability, cooling capability, lubricity, and flexibility provided by soluble metalworking coolants, corrosion resistance must also be considered, particularly when working with multiple metals. The sensitivity to surface oxidation differs from metal to metal. This makes it essential for machining specialists to understand and manage this critical element in their process and controlling their fluids.


With aluminum having a higher tendency towards oxidation, the fluid coolants that are in contact with the metal can rapidly result in discoloration, commonly referred to as staining. For complex parts, coolants can be present for more than an hour. This makes the choice of metalworking fluids particularly important to ensure resistance to staining and corrosion.
