Recent GLTST Meeting and SSO Reports On February 25, 2022, the GLTST held their latest meeting, (quite a few preliminary meetings have been held prior) led by the team lead, and the organisations founder, Greg Miiller. This meeting, encompassing all member organisations, was initiated through a discussion of the issues brought up in a previous steering committee meeting. Many issues need harmonisation, but a few were selected to begin the process. For instance, the shear stability methods, CEC L-014 and ASTM D6278/D7109, are different in the US and EU. Therefore, a proposal was pitched to evaluate the differences and establish equivalency through a collaboration of organisations in the US and EU. In addition, precision differences were noted in D4683 and L-036, and in D5800 and L-040.

Subsequently, in the ACEA report, Paul Decker- Brentano reported that the EU is looking towards electromobility, and that the EU is strongly in the direction of electric vehicles, both plug-in hybrid and battery. However, the timing is still undecided as the infrastructure is not currently supporting this move. On a different note, there is a need for the replacement or update of older tests for next sequence requirements, such as OEM 320. On the topic of emissions, the EU is looking into eliminating all particulate matter from engines, diesel, and gasoline.

Following the ACEA report, Satoshi Hirano provided an update on behalf of the Japanese Automotive Standards Organisation (JASO). JASO is the standard setting organisation for the Japanese automotive industry and has a focus on the Japanese market and related markets where engine oil product quality and applicability are concerned. In terms of backwards compatibility, they try to keep the tests for as long as they apply.

Huiyu Wang, a member of ASTM D02, reported on the six sections defined by the SINOPEC Research Institute of Petroleum Processing (RIPP), with high important standards, such as gasoline and diesel fuel. Diesel engine oils need to establish domestic diesel engine tests, hence there is internal collaboration ongoing to develop the engine oil category. Additionally, HD work is ongoing to establish domestic engine tests, but the final timeline has not yet been established.

Subsequently, Hind Abi-Akar reported on the current effort for the Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) and API to develop a new heavy duty diesel engine oil category with a scheduled completion set to 2027. The proposed requirements of the new category were shared with the attending organisations.

Several comments were made that there is a need to streamline the activities of the various organisations involved and a need to determine synergies and efficiencies.

In particular, Raj Shah, from the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE), commented that part of the reason for this activity is the desire to avoid overlap and duplication of work. The sharing of information in this forum allows input and collaboration, along with intellect and money to be shared, while the specifications are developed. For work on electric vehicle oils, Greg stated that SAE J3200 TC-3 for electric vehicle lubricants has developed a guide that will be reported at the next meeting.

Conclusion and next steps The recent GLTST meeting has brought forth several standard-specific issues and provided insight regarding the current trajectory of the engine oil and EV market of varying regions. Following the meeting, a handful of actions must be taken from affiliated parties. The chairs of CEC-L-014 and ASTM D6278/D7109 will be tasked with addressing the differences between the two methods. Similarly, ASTM and CEC will be contacted to work on the statistical streamlining and harmonisation of D4683 and L-036, and D5800 and L-040.

Now that cross-sharing has occurred between the SDOs, it is an opportunity to harmonise and cooperate on EV and engine oil activities, which will be discussed in the subsequent meeting. At this meeting, the SAE group will provide an update on EVs, alongside NLGI’s update of the additional grease classification, HLP. Further efforts will be made on achieving greater representation from Africa and South America at future meetings. The next GLTST meeting will be held at ASTM in June 2022 in Seattle, WA.
