The best defoamer is number 7, which has the highest foam destabilisation capacity with a medium value of compatibility.

Conclusion

Surfactants selection with DoE and a defoamers study can lead to a strong reduction of foam in fully formulated products. In the reference product, foam halving time reduces from more than 300 seconds to 18.5 seconds when the formulation adjustment is performed, and then from 18.5 seconds to 4.3 seconds with the addition of the best defoamer identified. By comparison a non-optimised formulation with the best defoamer halves the foam in 20.4 seconds. Ultra-low foaming products can counteract defoamer filtration on their own, showing superior results under normal conditions.

The results achieved demonstrated that an ultra-low foaming product can be obtained without a variation of base components and additives but with a selection of the right surfactant package. Hence this approach guarantees the same performances in terms of concentrate and emulsion stability while an improvement of foaming properties can be observed. The major effect is seen in terms of foam stability.
