Base oil interchangeability Whether done for reasons of availability, sustainability, or both, just how complex is it to change the base oil used in an existing heavy duty engine oil product? Base Oil Interchange (BOI) rules can be found in the relevant Codes of Practice (API and ATIEL). Re-refined base oils follow the same rules as conventional base oils from the same API group.


These rules facilitate interchange from one Group II to another Group II base oil without the need for the regeneration of all associated engine tests. As a result, it is in principle a straightforward approach to enable the extension of products in the HDEO mainline and premium market from conventional to re-refined Group II base oil should the need, or desire, arise.


A balanced approach Only by understanding what different base oils


and additives can bring to each HDEO segment can sustainability and performance be optimised in finished lubricants. For futureproof HDEO solutions, objectives must be met in the context of future industry specifications and trends, not just the status quo.


Base oil properties, availability, interchangeability, and price must all be considered when determining the right blend of performance, longevity, fuel economy and other environmental benefits.
