Times, they are a-changing… EDITORIAL

I sometimes think this industry is almost Darwinian in its ability to compete, survive and thrive in a constantly changing environment. Whilst we may not have to contend with the vagaries of natural selection, we do have to negotiate an increasingly complex regulatory and geo-political landscape; not to mention the ongoing challenges of environmental pressures and the social and technological advances that our lifestyles continue to demand of this sector.

2020 will signal a challenging year and decade. The issue of sustainability and the protection of our natural environment continues to create pressure in more extensive and far reaching ways for this industry. In this issue Lube explores two new regulatory changes that will impact significantly on the lubricants landscape (or should I say seascape!) in the years ahead. IMO2020, effective as of 1st January 2020, comes under scrutiny as Lubrizol’s technical marine experts explore the impact of the new 0.5% global sulphur cap, and how this will affect the way marine engine lubricants are formulated. The marine theme continues with DNV-GL’s study on ‘aft-stern tube bearing lubrication performance’ article. We will be reviewing the longer term impact in the months ahead.

There is understandable concern at the new Group ll import duty tariffs which come into effect on 1st January - the implications for the supply chain are worrying, particularly for SMEs. Read the UKLA insight piece on page 61. There are more changes to the legislative framework Annex VIII on Poison Centres and CLP legislation (Classifying, Labelling and Packaging) surrounding ‘submission of information on dangerous mixtures’; we highlight the possible impact in UEIL News.

Elsewhere this issue Tribology is in the spotlight – I thought it might be helpful to have the full definition of a word we all know but perhaps don’t fully appreciate - ‘the science and engineering of interacting surfaces in relative motion, which includes the study and application of the principles of friction,

lubrication and wear’. Associate Professor Boris Zhmud of BIZOL writes on Engine tribology whilst Dr Manfred Jungk of MJ Tribology asks ‘Tribology – a toolbox or the key to our future?’ Every day is a learning day!

There is celebration too! The re-refining success story... GEIR President, Dr Christian Hartmann shares GEIR’s special 50th Anniversary feature and reports on the dramatic shift in waste oil perception and industry engagement (finally!) with compelling evidence of its intrinsic circular value and the welcome greater acceptance across the industry. There is in-depth analysis in this month’s Lube Tech from Nynas AB on ‘High Viscous Naphthenic Oils on Various Thickener Systems’ on page 32 and regular features include VLS on counterfeiting, this month’s ‘In Conversation with...’ interview with Dr Stephan Baumgartel, MD of Germany’s VSI Association and a Russia Local Report.

On a personal note, I ‘conferenced’ in Stuttgart, Rosenheim, Brussels, Amsterdam, Athens, Zagreb and Cannes. The year culminated in last month’s UKLA Annual Dinner, a wonderful evening of celebration and connection, with a welcome announcement from Headline Sponsor, Multisol, that in place of a giveaway, a tree will be planted for every attendee. Lube magazine will share its own sustainability action plan in depth in February! And a first for the UKLA and Lube... the ‘Women in the Lubricants Industry Conference’ is coming to London on 11th March 2020!! Watch this space...

And finally, Laurie and I thank YOU - our advertisers, contributors, supporters, media partners, UEIL associations and growing army of subscribers/readers. Without you, this wouldn’t be possible! Happy Christmas!
