EVENTS Hitting a high note in Houston

Machinery Lubrication 2019 draws over 400 attendees Natalie Blythe, Noria Corporation

With over 400 industrial professionals congregating in Houston, Texas, USA, the second-annual Machinery Lubrication Conference & Exhibition, held Nov. 4-6, was a resounding success that drew global leaders from 21 countries, including the United States.

Prior to the event’s official start, attendees were onsite for four pre-conference workshops, and all walked away with new tips and techniques to elevate their skills. Monday evening ended on a high note as attendees got their first glimpse of the exhibit hall, which featured a record-breaking 47 exhibitors, during the meet-and-greet reception.

Machinery Lubrication 2019 officially began on Tuesday, Nov. 5, with the keynote address by Lance Allred, TEDx star, author and first deaf NBA player. Born with 80 percent hearing loss from rH complications at birth, Allred gave an inspirational presentation titled “Lions and Leaders: The Principles of Perseverance.”

Over the course of two days, attendees chose from 58 different sessions on topics ranging from lubrication best practices and contamination prevention to oil analysis reports, lean Six Sigma and detecting machine failures with the internet of things (IoT).

Throughout Machinery Lubrication 2019, attendees visited exhibitor booths to get their game cards stamped in hopes of winning the show prize: a 2019 Sea-Doo Spark. On Wednesday, Nov. 6, James Perkins, maintenance/lubrication technician at East Kentucky Power, was announced as the winner.

For 2020, the Machinery Lubrication Conference & Exhibition will head to the Galveston Island Convention Center in Galveston, Texas, USA, Nov. 9-11. Details: Visit conference.machinerylubrication.com

GOMA 52nd Lubricants & Base Oils Symposium, 16-18 October 2019

This year’s GOMA Symposium was held in October in the beautiful Emerald Ballroom of the Esplanade Hotel, Zagreb’s most iconic and most prestigious historic hotel. This event was organised by the Croatian Society for Fuels and Lubricants (GOMA) in partnership with the European Lubricating Grease Institute (ELGI), for the third time. The Symposium brought together over 130 participants from more than 25 countries, representing almost 90 organisations.

Following the welcoming greeting, the symposium began with plenary lectures. The first lecture was presented by Adri van de Ven from ATIEL. He gave a great overview on development of interchange guidelines and engine tests in Europe. This was followed by the engaging presentation of Sharbel Luzuriaga from KLINE & Company. In his lecture, he projected the future of engine oils until 2040. The last plenary lecture by George S. Dodos from Eldon’s, was on significant changes in the marine lubricant quality requirements, as a result of increasingly stringent environmental

regulations. A number of thematic lectures followed with extremely useful and interesting content.

Also worth mentioning is a seminar that provided a useful overview of practical possibilities for customising industrial lubricant formulations depending on the future availability of base stocks, conducted by Prof. Thomas Norrby from Nynas, as well as a panel discussion on the future of small and medium-sized lubricant manufacturers, moderated by Andrianne Philippou, editor of Lube Magazine.

In addition to the working part of the programme, this gathering also offered a rich social program where participants had the opportunity, in a casual and relaxed environment, to exchange their experiences, opinions and knowledge, but also to create their own business network.
