As always, the Annual Dinner also saw the presentation of a number of awards to certain individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the industry either in 2019 or over the course of their career as a whole.
David Hopkinson awarded the UKLA President’s Award (sponsored by Infineum) to Dr Ted Wright for his outstanding and sustained contribution to the UKLA through his role in leading the VLS Technical Review Panel, coordinating its activities, advising the VLS Board for their deliberations and provided training for many delegates on all aspects of the industry through the UKLA’s Certificate of Lubricant Competence training programme.
The UKLA’s Special Award of Council was awarded to Caroline Slinn, now of Fuchs, who has been a chemist in the metalworking fluid industry for 15 years (working her way up through the
ranks of Polartech, Batoyle, Afton and most recently Italmatch), and who has supported the UKLA with regular European Policy Update briefings on ionic mixtures, formaldehyde and the future of boric acid, made regular and prompt reports to the UKLA Board, as well as helping us to deliver the Health & Safety module on our Certificate of Lubricant Competence course.
The Young Employee of the Year Award (sponsored by IMCD) recognises those individuals aged under 30 who have made an outstanding contribution to their companies, their teams and their own professional development.
This year the field was very competitive with the Board of UKLA eventually, after much deliberation,
decided not only to award an individual as the Young Employee of the Year, but also to make honourable mentions for two deserving candidates.
The first individual worthy of an honourable mention was Aimilia Neroutsou; Field Engineer for Total UK. Amelia’s technical competence meant that she quickly became their lead for Oil Condition Monitoring within the team and providing expert support to offshore staff through training to operators on the theory of oil condition monitoring.
The second honourable mention went to Jack Milward, for his work on accreditation management, building cross-functional relationships and reducing waste streams within Fuchs, and who now manages contractors to ensure compliance whilst also seeking cost reduction opportunities.
However, the honour of Young Employee of the Year 2019 was ultimately awarded to Owen Lloyd from Morris Lubricants, who was given the award for – among other achievements – his work on introducing methods
within Morris Lubricants which have a positive impact on the environment including reducing unnecessary incoming deliveries, encouraging reverse logistics, and assessing the sustainability of suppliers.
The evening was rounded out by the humorous stylings of our guest speaker; comedy magician John Archer, who entertained the guests with a variety of tricks, jokes and inimitable stylings on the banjo.
Plans are already well underway for the 2020 Annual Dinner, and we look forward to seeing as full and as enthusiastic a turnout as enjoyed the event this year.
