In practical terms, the TC/CC Committees are responsible for monitoring all technical and supply chain developments which could affect members of UEIL. Furthermore, they provide constructive input to the EU institutions to ensure the implementation of efficient and balanced EU competition policies that reflect the needs of both businesses and consumers. As such, part of the job of these Committees is to monitor and work with both OEMs and national competition authorities to allow for the availability of the technical specifications and thus ensure a level playing field amongst the market actors.

The TC/CC Committees actively participate in the meetings of ATIEL and have regular contact with various industry bodies such as ACEA, CECRA, FIGIEFA, ATC, ELGI and the OEMs. Three joint Committee meetings are held every year, and an annual report is presented to the UEIL General Assembly.

In 2019 the TC/CC Committees handled 32 cases, most of which (66%) concerned motor vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc.), whilst other cases were subdivided into agriculture equipment (9%), construction and off road equipment (12.5%), and others (12.5%).

Both committees also dealt with a range of other issues including access to technical information and misleading communication (31% and 27% respectively of these other cases), misuse of warranty (25%), approval procedure (11%), and other issues (6%).

In addition, it is worth mentioning that 2019 was the first year where we dealt with a case concerning an electric car.

The last UEIL TC/CC Committees meeting was held on 2 October 2019 in Brussels. The next meeting will take place on 22 January 2020.

Users, suppliers and researchers meet at 22nd International Colloquium Tribology

From 28 – 30 January 2020, the biannual conference takes place in Stuttgart/Ostfildern, Germany. It is the largest European conference on tribology and lubrication with participants from all around the world and has been established as an international exchange forum for industry and academia. Supported by the International Advisory Board, the Programme Planning Committee guided by their Steering Committee was able to assemble a 3-day programme. Conference days begin with inspiring plenary presentations before continuing with 9 parallel sessions. The opening session gives an overview of the lubricant industry in a macroeconomic environment and the trends and emerging issues in tribology. The concluding session covers the topic ‘Carbon dioxide’ and the latest from the Young Tribologists.

One of the main topics of the 2020 conference is the forthcoming e-mobility technology, its various aspects, and its consequences for the lubrication and tribology community. Special sessions cover ‘Sustainable Lubricants’ and the ‘i-Tribomat Initiative’.

The topics of the parallel sessions are matched to the Tribology disciplines of Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Physics and Information Technology.

The 22nd International Colloquium Tribology gives attendees the opportunity to hear leading university researchers present their latest findings, and gives industry representatives the chance to inspire scientists to develop new solutions. A parallel exhibition and the Conference Dinner on Wednesday evening offer the opportunity to conversations and discussions that are likely to spark new ideas to meet current tribological challenges.

After 3 days of technical presentations, the participants have the opportunity to join a visit at Mercedes-Benz- Museum in Stuttgart.
