research programme workshops: Use of DRAMs and other methods for monitoring MWF mist
Machine workshops use water-based metalworking fluids (MWF) to cool cutting machines but this can release a mist of MWF. Machinists inhaling this mist are at risk of developing chronic lung disease.
To reduce this risk, key actions are maintaining MWF quality and minimising exposure to mist. Monitoring mist is important to identify those at risk of exposure. However, the analytical method used in the UK to monitor MWF mist is now used infrequently due to changes in the composition of new MWFs.
This report summarises a knowledge sharing workshop on the use of particle monitors as an alternative to monitoring mist. These are known as Direct Reading Aerosol Monitors (DRAMs). Obituary: A. GRAEME MARRS MBE
One of the great characters of our Industry sadly died on the 16th of August at the age of 79.
Graeme joined Meade, King and Robinson (MKR) in the early 1960’s and was Chairman of the Company until his retirement in 2010. He could trace his family connection to a founder of the Company Joseph Fletcher Robinson, when the business was established in Liverpool in 1867, and even after retirement he followed the fortunes of the Company through his presence on the family council.
Graeme primarily specialised in the Wax Industry both home and overseas and remained an active member of the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers to the present time.
In his personal life he had a great passion for rugby particularly his beloved Birkenhead Park where he made a great contribution to the club for circa fifty years, having commenced as a player with Rosslyn Park following his schooldays at Rossa II. He was also an influential figure behind the annual North of England Schools Sevens.
For those who were fortunate enough to be associated with Graeme he will be well remembered, and sadly missed, as a charismatic raconteur with at times a wicked sense of humour and a very good friend to have had.

and Safety Executive (HSE) scientists also presented a UKLA funded study of different DRAMs tested using a standardised MWF mist.
The workshop participants concluded that: • DRAMs can provide a relative measurement of changes to MWF mist but not reliable quantitative measurements.
• Dust lamps and smoke generators are also practical methods to visualise MWF mist, and affordable to small workshops.
• An evaluation in machine workshops of DRAMs alongside dust lamps and smoke generators is required.
