GEIR Update:

GEIR’s expertise assists German institute’s waste oils research

As counter-intuitive as it may sound, the adoption of new legislation does not mean that its content will be set in stone for a few years. The Waste Framework Directive is in that regard the perfect example. Adopted only in May 2018, the European Commission is already hard at work to support its future implementation, notably when it comes to its waste oils provisions. The newly adopted directive indeed prescribes a waste oils data assessment, backed by a report to the other EU institution, and possibly a proposal with new measures and targets for the treatment of waste oils – and all this before 2022!

As this is a lot of homework to deliver within a short timeframe, the German environmental research institute Öko-Institut was commissioned to support the European Commission. It will conduct a study aiming at gathering as much data and knowledge as possible on waste oils, including quantitative data, best practices in the field of treatment and suggestions for follow-up work. Due to a lack of harmonised and consistent reporting by EU Member States, there are many gaps to fill in – and this is where GEIR steps in. Identified as an essential stakeholder to consult with, GEIR and its members accepted the challenge. They rolled up their sleeves these past months to provide the research institute with a clear and comprehensive picture of the waste oils sector in the EU, backed by reliable data.
