engine oils have raised over the years, requiring more durable deposit control.
Conclusions
Engine oil specifications, if tailored for current and future needs of state-of-the-art engine platforms will not only allow the development of products having a stronger detergency performance (i.e. cleaner pistons allowing longer oil drain intervals), but will also offer greater fuel economy capabilities (see Figure 3). The development of cost-efficient top tier engine oils for next generation engines require tools matching their needs. Considering how long engine test development programs can take, the industry should be ready to respond quickly.

Figure 2 also shows oil soot levels in the industry engine dynamometer tests. It is not only the high soot levels in the industry engine tests, but also the type of soot these old technology engines generate, which require additive packages which are no longer cost-effective for modern engines. This dilemma is even stronger with respect to next generation engine platforms.
