EDITORIAL Editorial
Hello! And welcome to my first editorial for Lube Magazine.
Taking on a new post can be overwhelming: new people, products, places, protocols… there’s much to take on board. Fortunately for me the UKLA team, both past and present,
have been super helpful and welcoming; I could not have asked for a smoother initiation into the world of lubricants.
oming; I could not
As I tick month 2 off my calendar, it’s clear our position as the official journal of the UEIL is more pertinent than ever; given the unprecedented challenges and demands facing the oil and gas industry, geopolitically, environmentally, socially and economically, it’s important that Lube Magazine continues to present the European perspective on lubricants to a global readership.
While the industry navigates its way through the risks and opportunities ahead, Lube will continue to shed light on key issues, informing, discussing and raising awareness through relevant and topical sector focused articles, interviews and reports. And every issue will continue to feature Lube Tech, our centre-spread feature that provides in-depth analytical content and is widely respected as an invaluable academic resource.
Meanwhile, I will be navigating the industry conferences, exhibitions and events, both locally and abroad. I’m looking forward to meeting established friends and making new ones, to developing future industry partnerships and associations, and to getting to know UKLA members through site visits and meetings (which I will be reporting on in future issues). And on that note, a warm UKLA welcome to Chemical Arrow Europe Ltd and Crest Oil Products Ltd, our 2 new members.
This is an exciting and dynamic industry, as I’m discovering daily. Equally exciting is the fact that Lube Magazine is the industry’s only global publication dedicated solely to the lubricants sector. Which makes Lube unique.
I feel privileged to be a part of it and I look forward to developing it as my role here progresses.
Get in touch! I would love to hear from you…

LUBMAT2018 Presented as ‘The Closest Encounter between Science and Industry’ Lubmat 2018 was also my first encounter with the lubricants industry. As a newcomer, with just a week in my new role, I thought I would feel a stranger. But I hadn’t taken into account bumping into Prof Thomas Norrby of Nynas, en-route to the Official Opening. From that moment on I felt part of the family.
The Official Opening of Lubmat 2018 led by Ana Aranzabe, the conference co-chairperson, to an international audience of 230 delegates. The welcome address was followed by speeches from representatives of industry, academia and government, including: Bureau Veritas (co-organisers of Lubmat 2020), Prof Ian Sherrington from the Jost Institute for Tribotechnology and an official from Gipuzkoa and Donostia San Sebastian.
Keynote speakers were: Sam Fisher (Bureau Veritas) on AI, Christine Fuchs (Fuchs Petrolub Se) on Future Trends, Winfried Keiper (Robert Bosch Gmbh) on Condition Monitoring, Bharat Bhushan (Winbigler/Ohio Eminent Scholar) on Bioinspired Mechanically Durable Surfaces and M Del Pilar De Miguel Ortega (CDTI) on Funding I&D to Market and Society. The audience then separated into 3 smaller rooms for the individually themed Oral Sessions running concurrently on Tribology, Lubricants and Lubrication Management and Condition Monitoring.
The elegant late 19th century Miramar Palace, overlooking San Sebastian’s La Concha Bay, was the perfect setting for the 2-day conference and supporting exhibition. A traditional dinner at historic Petritegi Cider House was preceded by an entertaining ‘Strong Man’ display of stone lifting (a national sport apparently), wetting the appetite for the unlimited flow of cider that followed. A guided visit/tour to IK4-Tekniker and BVLM was offered to delegates staying for Day 3.
I would like to extend a very personal thank you to Prof Norrby for taking the time to welcome me and to introduce me to the great and the good at my inaugural conference. I learnt so much, not least how much more there is to learn, and very much look forward to Lubmat2020. Before then of course, I hope to meet many more Lube readers and UEIL members at future conferences, including the UEIL Congress in Budapest in October.
