Nynas inaugurates new hydrogen plant for SEK 800 million

Recently speciality oil company Nynas inaugurated a new hydrogen plant in Nynäshamn, Sweden. The investment of SEK 800 million safeguards the refinery's supply of hydrogen and lays the foundations for future expansion. Next year Nynas will be switching its raw material for the production of hydrogen to natural gas. This will reduce the company's carbon dioxide emissions by 20,000 tonnes per year.

The plant was inaugurated at the beginning of September 2010 by County Governor Per Unckel.

The demand for oil that is tailored to suit increasingly stringent health and environmental requirements is growing across the world. By way of example, the Nynäshamn refinery exports the new environmentally sound tyre oil to tyre manufacturers all over the world. The supply of hydrogen is key to Nynas specialised manufacturing process. Hydrogen is used to improve the chemical composition of the oils and to remove impurities.

“It is the increased demand we are experiencing that is driving this investment. We are at the cutting edge of development in terms of environmentally sound and less harmful oils, and we are working continuously on developing our products to maintain our strong position in the global market,” said CEO Staffan Lennström.

The company’s products can be found in infrastructure essential to socio-economic development. Nynas oil cools and insulates 70% of the world's electricity. Nynas has also developed a particularly strong binding agent for silent asphalt which is increasingly being used to reduce noise for people living close to major roads. Nynas oil is also used in the new hybrid batteries, in printing ink, in oils for metalworking, in lubricants and greases, in rubber mouldings and tyres.

“We are really pleased to be starting up our new facility which will safeguard our supply of hydrogen. When we replace the raw material for hydrogen production with natural gas next year, we will also be in a position to reduce our carbon emissions by 20,000 tonnes per year, which is something we are working on constantly,” said Staffan Lennström.
