Reliable and eco-friendly New readily biodegradable gear oil for thrusters and rudder propellers

Klüberbio EG 2-150 is a readily biodegradable gear oil launched by Klüber Lubrication especially for use in thrusters and rudder propellers. With this synthetic ester oil, Klüber has succeeded in developing an eco-compatible alternative to mineral oil which at the same time offers the reliability required for these gears with their taxing lubrication requirements. A leading global manufacturer of propeller shaft seals subjected Klüberbio EG 2-150 to a dynamic endurance test, which it passed successfully.

Oil loss via the water-side propeller shaft seals as well as oil leakage due to normal wear, accidents or operating errors are becoming a growing threat to the environment as marine traffic is increasing. Ship operators have therefore been calling for an eco-compatible alternative to the currently used mineral-oil- based products for several years. The biodegradability of Klüberbio EG 2-150 is at least 60 per cent after 28 days (tested acc. to OECD 301 F), and it is not toxic to marine organisms (OECD 201, 202 and 203 tests).

Klüberbio EG 2-150 has a high scuffing resistance, protecting gear teeth reliably against fretting damage even at high peak loads. It has a longer service life than mineral oils owing to its

good stability towards ageing, oxidation and hydrolysis. Consequently, oil changes are required less often, enabling a reduction of maintenance and disposal costs. Due to its favourable viscosity-temperature behaviour as well as high- and low-temperature characteristics, this synthetic ester oil can be used over a wider temperature range than conventional gear oils based on mineral oil.

In the development of this new readily biodegradable special oil, Klüber cooperated closely with its affiliated companies SIMRIT and Merkel Freudenberg, both leading suppliers of shaft seals and profiled seals to the maritime industry. Like Klüber Lubrication, these two companies belong to the Freudenberg Group. Together, the three companies are therefore in a unique position to match elastomers and lubricating oils for the taxing requirements of propeller and thruster manufacturers and shipowners.

TOTAL Industrial lubricants software TIG® The new reference for lubrication management

The quality of lubrication, particularly in industry, is based on the quality of the products, the use to which they are put and strict monitoring of lubrication itself.

Lubrication is a complex operation, which requires one to respect multiple parameters ranging from the specific technical characteristics of each machine to the professional competence of the operators, without forgetting the lubrication intervals.

TIG® XP 5 was designed with a view to

assisting industry in the development of its maintenance operations.

TIG® XP 5 is:

A tool that is easy to use Very simple to use, TIG®

XP 5 employs

the standard Windows interface while offering a signalling system that can be immediately understood by any user,

even if he or she is lacking in particular computer competence. Intended for an international customer base, TIG®
