Cormoran Strike has always been a particular hit in audio, even before the BBC TV adaptation that helped Lethal White’s hardback sales to grow 91% on series predecessor Career of Evil. In the acknowledgements of Galbraith’s second title, Te Silkworm, the by-then-unmasked Rowling thanked Little, Brown’s audiobook team for getting Galbraith to number one “without having a clue who he was”. September saw a
trio of new entries at the top of the Audible chart, with Yuval Noah Harari’s 21 Lessons for the 21st Century and Bob Woodward’s Fear joining Lethal White in the top three. Te latter follows on from the enormous success of Israeli author Harari’s Sapiens, which has spent 18 months in the Audio Download Chart—and held eighth place since June. Te slow-burning non-fiction hit, which made its début in the Audible chart in March 2017, two years after publi- cation, has never finished higher than fourth. Fear, rather like January’s
audio download number one and fellow White House exposé Fire and Fury, has charted strongly in print, e-book and audio. But it did not match Fire and Fury’s format

with book deals than actual staff these days. Despite much of the information in both Fear and Fire and Fury being freely available in the media—and, indeed, tweeted directly from the presidential Twitter account—UK book-buyers may be picking up these titles simply to gain an understanding of this most baffling of American choices. Tough, of course, it doesn’t work in the other direc- tion—there is no Brexit Fire and Fury tearing up the charts on the other side of the Atlantic.
