ITM UPDATE SIMONE BUCKLEY
A fond farewell, but not goodbye
Amid constant change, the ITM community has a promising future
looking out over a sunny pool with my two daughters splashing around, smiling up at me wondering what it is so important that I have to be on my laptop while we are on holiday! I’ll tell them later I was writing my final column for
BBT after six years of being CEO at ITM, the association I am immensely honoured and proud to have headed up. During my tenure, the team has worked diligently to run an association that is open and educational to travel industry professionals whether they are buyers or suppliers. Our aim has always been to enable both to work together to achieve the best they can for each other. I have to admit it hasn’t always been an easy path because our two membership audiences are often at odds with each other. When I became CEO it was before mega data, cognitive computing,
robotics and chatbots. It was a time when airlines hadn’t thought about NDC, and GDSs operated unchallenged as the main centres for product distribution in the business travel sector. There was talk of cloud computing, Google search and social media, and how new entrants might affect our fairly well organised travel programme ecosystem. Looking ahead with Brexit looming and the uncertainty that faces us all, I feel even more strongly change is good and the future for ITM is bright. After all, where else do industry professionals turn for education, advice and peer-to-peer benchmarking when times are challenging and change is happening at such a fast pace? More importantly though, I think the future for business travel and those businesses that support it is as promising as it has ever been. For those who can grasp change with an open mind and focus on their customers’ changing needs, the world is their oyster. ITM is a community of people who share a common interest and that has extended beyond the travel business. Over the years we’ve had great fun engaging in charity activities (a nod to the dancers, singers, DJs and sportspeople among us), sharing cocktail recipes (and tasting them) and attending conferences. On a professional level, without our members and volunteers we wouldn’t be able to achieve the things that we do. Thank you for your support. I will stay involved with ITM but now I can confidently hand over to my successor, Scott Davies, to continue the excellent work of our association.
