Public consultation opens on future of aviation


Airfares and hotel rates set to increase in 2018


by 8.5 per cent and 9.5 per cent respectively for UK business travellers next year, according to research by Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) and the GBTA.


The price hikes will be higher in the UK than in western


Europe as a whole, where airfares are set to rise by 5.5 per cent in 2018, while hotel rates are forecast to go up by 6.3 per cent. CWT/GBTA’s 2018 Global Travel Forecast also predicts that


ground transport prices in the UK will be flat next year due to “downward pricing pressure” caused by increased competition. The biggest increase in airline prices in the UK is set to be for continental business fares, which are forecast to rise by 8.7 per cent in 2018, while intercontinental economy prices are set to go up by 8.5 per cent. For hotels, CWT is predicting that rates for UK travellers will go up by 8.2 per cent year-on-year for midscale properties while upscale hotel prices will rise by 10.7 per cent. 

Transport secretary Chris Grayling wants to gather views from around the UK which will help form the country’s aviation strategy up to and beyond 2050. The government’s aviation consultation will ask the public about key issues such as technology, security, environment and customer service, as well as how to make the best use of existing airport capacity. The public’s views are also being sought on potential new services such as airport bag check-ins in town centres and a “luggage portering” service.


Grayling said: “Aviation is central to our future prosperity as we leave the European Union. As a global, trading nation we want to build on the great industry we have today and create opportunities for people up and down the country


“Our new aviation strategy will look beyond the new runway at Heathrow and sets out a comprehensive long- term plan for UK aviation. It will support jobs and economic growth across the whole of the UK.”


The consultation will run


throughout the rest of 2017 and 2018, and will be followed by the publication of a final aviation strategy by the end of next year.
