ACCORDING TO SAVILLSin its report The UK Extended Stay Market (2016/17), 2017 will be a bumper year for development in the UK, with more than 2,600 units set to come on line – a 13.8 per cent increase on existing stock.

The following is an indication of what opened recently and what is to come.

• IN LONDON, NEWCOMER CUCKOOZ opened its first property in Aldgate last September, has further units in Shoreditch and Hoxton and has just opened in King’s Cross in August. It is looking at locations in and around London Bridge and Old Street. Established operator Go Native London Warehouse’s aparthotel will debut in 2019.

• MARLIN’S FIRST APARTHOTEL opened in Waterloo on May 26 and benefited from BA’s IT problems during the bank holiday weekend. “Loads of people were looking for last-minute accommodation, so what we thought was going to be a gentle launch turned out to be rather hectic,” says managing director Susan Cully. “The feedback has been superb.”

• Q APARTMENTS INTERNATIONAL ACQUIRED Skyline Worldwide, now Skyline Q, and investment will lead to more than 5,000 units by 2020. “There will be continued consolidation and we will also be looking into further acquisitions,” says CEO Thiago Hahn. In addition, Ascott has

bought an 80 per cent stake in Quest Apartment Hotels.

• WILDE APARTHOTELS BY STAYCITY opens on London’s Strand this autumn, Cycas Hospitality’s Residence Inns at London Bridge (August) and Kensington (Q4), South Point Suites in Bermondsey (Q3), Go Native’s Empire Warehouse in Bear Gardens, SE1 (autumn 2017), Supercity Aparthotels in Furnival Street, WC2 (January 2018), Stow-away in Waterloo (October), and in 2018 Grange Hotels opens an all-suite hotel at Tower Bridge. Skyline in Canary Wharf opened in April, and Roomspace in Canning Town in July.

• MANCHESTER IS BENEFITING from huge investment, including a £1 billion transformation of the airport, doubling passenger capacity to 45 million. Aparthotels have opened this year from Citysuites (February), Staycity (May) and Roomzzz. Opening soon – co-located Crowne Plaza/Staybridge Suites (late 2017/early 2018), Whitworth Locke and Staying Cool’s aparthotel with partner Bespoke Hotels (both 2018).

• EDINBURGH’S PORTFOLIO continues to expand, with Eden Locke (July), Lateral City (October) and Mode (2018). Aberdeen will host Residence Inn by Marriott (October), one of several openings that will double the brand’s European portfolio this year.

• OTHER CITIES ARE ALSO getting a good showing. Cambridge-based Citystay has started taking one- night bookings, as has

Newcastle-based Week2week, leading to a 40 per cent rise in business. Room 2 by Lamington is coming to Southampton (late 2017), Cotels to Milton Keynes (Q3 2017), Supercity to Brighton (2018) and Cycas Hospitality’s Residence Inn/Moxy to Slough (2019). Although serviced apartments represent just 3 per cent of accommodation (rooms) in the UK, in Liverpool, Reading and York, they account for 9 per cent, 8 per cent and 7 per cent of accommodation (STR) respectively.

• IN EUROPE, STAYCITY will open in Marseille and Lyon, Fraser Suites in Hamburg and Premier Suites in Rotterdam. In autumn, Residence Inn/ Moxy, SACO Wittenberg Aparthotel and Yays debut in Amsterdam. Bridgestreet’s Mode opens in Paris in 2018.
