BY FAILING TO COMBINE SILOS OF DATA, YOU CAN NEVER BUILD THE BIG PICTURE. STAKEHOLDER VIEWS REMAIN IN SILOS, AND REAL ORGANISATIONAL VALUE OF TRAVEL AND MEETINGS IS LEFT UNLOCKED. TODAY, IT’S NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH DATA AN ORGANISATION HAS; IT’S ABOUT HAVING THE CAPABILITY TO BLEND TOGETHER THE RIGHT DATA SOURCES TO DELIVER VALUABLE BUSINESS INSIGHTS.
Until now, the industry has found traditional management information a good enabler. But are we missing a trick? Companies want savings that aren’t at the cost of the traveller experience and welfare but where’s the tangible link with all of our stakeholders?
We should be examining the real impact that travel and meetings have on organisational performance. In doing so, CEOs and boards get an intelligent platform by which to make informed decisions - on property,
people, spending priorities and revenue opportunities. To achieve the real objectives, a broad range of stakeholders need to be engaged, and their buy-in for change secured.
Take HR departments as an example. If we really want their support for change, isn’t it time to look at how business travel can support all of their aims? I really don’t believe it’s as simple as changing your business class policy. How many HR managers would like to know the tipping point for a high performer’s resignation? What about the frequency, mode and density of business travel that’s more likely to result in absenteeism?
Smarter use of analytics from data collaboration can give us the answers that help us communicate with that relevance. And if employee education can be based on sound data profiles, it will have greater influence on traveller behaviour.
From this, we know how to influence the real relationship between travel and meetings and its impact on revenue, people costs and the total cost of travel. We can personalise communications with varying groups of travellers. We can send the most relevant message, in the right tone, at the right time, through the right channel, to the right person.
This industry must build solutions that deliver genuine actionable insights. We must help people educate employees to make smarter decisions. Those decisions should make sure employees’ long-term health and wellbeing are looked after; they travel less, travel smarter and enable organisational objectives.
