THE CLIENT Daria Radwan, 41, who works at the


University of Reading as a department administrator and is also a part-time photographer, lives with her husband Joe, 43, who runs his own business as a property renovator, in a three-bedroom house in Berkshire. They bought the property in July 2019 and are keen to make the most of its utility room (formerly the kitchen) to supplement the current kitchen-diner.


THE SPACE


The kitchen-diner measures 5.8 x 2.3m. A utility leads off from the rear, but is only 1.4m wide because a downstairs WC juts in – so there’s only room for cabinets along one wall. There’s a pocket of space to the right of the entrance, but one of these walls is home to pipework, so any cabinetry in this area could restrict accessibility.


THE PLANS


1 Laundry The existing kitchen includes a washing machine that will be relocated into a hallway cupboard under the stairs. 2 Daylight There’s only one small window in the kitchen itself, but light from French doors in the dining area helps to boost it. 3 Cooling A freestanding fridge is placed in the utility, directly by the entrance to the kitchen. 4 Dining room The kitchen-diner is open to a more formal dining room, so the table and seating in the diner don’t have to cater to large gatherings.


THE BRIEF 1


The utility is dark and windowless, but Daria and Joe


are keen to maximise its potential. They would like to see if there’s any opportunity to get daylight in from an adjacent WC.

In the utility, they would like a pantry, storage for cleaning


products, built-in fridge- freezer, and a double oven. They prefer a neat, streamlined look and don’t want open shelving.

On Daria and Joe’s illumination wishlist are a three-light


industrial pendant in black and glass over the dining table plus two single lanterns for the kitchen and utility room.
