EDITOR’S COMMENT
THE INSTALLER CRISIS – TIME TO ACT
his month we’re talking installation or, more specifi cally, the fact that there simply aren’t enough skilled and qualifi ed installers available to fulfi l the industry’s current needs.
This skills gap shouldn’t be news to anyone. Experts have been warning the industry for years about this impending issue, caused largely by a lack of investment in vocational training. The reason the issue has come to the fore today is because the continued surge in demand for KBB renovations, brought about by the lockdowns, has
magnifi ed the issue by putting pressure on existing installers and shining a light on the severe shortage of new blood coming through. While there doesn’t appear to be any short-term fi x for this problem,
there are some obvious long-term solutions that the industry can implement now to ensure that we close the gap and prevent another crisis in the future. Read our in-depth analysis of the situation on pages 37-42. We’ve also got a fascinating interview with Keith Myers (pgs 44-46), the co-founder of The Myer’s Touch in Winchester – this year’s worthy winner of the coveted kbbreview Kitchen Retailer of the Year award. Not only is he a shining example of what independent retailing is all about, he also has a rather interesting approach that combines logic and business acumen with empathy and creativity, showing that he puts as much value on understanding the role of the business in the community as he does on what they need to do to make money. Elsewhere we talk to Danny Wood, the MD of kitchen manufacturer Arbor Lane Interiors. Wood’s story is quite unique in that – as the owner and founder of independent retail business Burlanes Interiors, he says he knows what his customers really need from a supplier. All that’s left for me to do is remind you all that the closing date for entries to the 2022 kbbreview Retail and Design Awards is Tuesday, November 16. All the information about how to enter and how to book your seats and tables at the event – taking place in Birmingham on March 7, 2022 – at
