Symphony’s Wexford kitchen cabinetry and drawers collection in the Gallery range offers an updated look on the classic shaker kitchen with its raised centre panel

Harrison comments: “Of all the appliance categories that provide a real sense of theatre in the kitchen, it has to be surface cooking, whether by the power of the gas flame or a technologically advanced induction hob, or a mix of both. In addition, the trend toward vented extractor hobs allows the client to have far greater functionality from a single appliance.”

Stainless steel

Meanwhile, Franke is paying homage to professional kitchens with its premium stainless-steel worktops, which set the hob directly into the surface.

This cooktop is finished in Puresteel, an 8mm solid stainless-steel surface with a Franke-exclusive ceramic coating called PearlFinish, which repels water, is anti-fingerprint and easy to clean. All the work surfaces are made bespoke to order and can include integrated stainless-steel sinks, taps and gas burner or induction hobs. Puresteel worktops are also available in 4mm and 6mm thickness, with matching splashbacks and end panels.

Multifunctional ovens also continue to be popular with consumers – with steam functionality, sous vide and pyrolytic cleaning still topping the wish list of many an aspiring home chef. Of course, there will also always be a place for the range cooker, which remains a status symbol and is certainly dramatic.

Over the years, manufacturers of range cookers have upped their game with technology to match up to built-in models and to meet the needs of modern homeowners, and now offer all sorts of options.

Bertazzoni, for example, offers 48

range cookers with gas, induction and teppanyaki sections. They also feature Bertazzoni Assist – a pre-set program function that takes the hassle out of cooking, allowing the user to spend more time with guests.

Rangemaster too offers hi-tech capability within its traditionally-styled range cookers. The company lays claim to having the UK’s first and only range cooker with a dedicated steam oven cavity, in the form of the Nexus Steam Induction. The 1,100mm-wide appliance also boasts a multifunction oven, grill, hob, and proving drawer, allowing the user to simultaneously bake, batch cook, boil, grill, griddle, prove, roast, simmer, slow cook, sous vide, sterilise, stir fry, and keep food or crockery warm.

For those looking for something more

streamline and dis crete, there are loads of built-in options on the market and many of these come with smart connectivity.

One of the first brands to jump on board with smart connectivity was Samsung, with its FamilyHub App, which allows users to control everything, from the fridge to the oven, from their phone. Many other brands offer smart tech too, including Hoover, with its Hoover Wizard, Bosch with Home Connect, Whirlpool with its 6th Sense technology and most recently Smeg with SmegConnect.

As well as multifunctional and smart

One great advantage of a larder is that a kitchen no longer needs to be full of cupboards. It frees up entire walls for an attractive piece of artwork, which helps to make it feel less like a kitchen and more of a relaxed environment Matt Baker, kitchen designer at Harvey Jones

cooking, flexibility is key to the keen home chef and Samsung has been a pioneer in this regard, with its Dual Cook system, and now Dual Cook Flex. The Dual Cook Flex allows users to cook multiple dishes simultaneously with different cooking modes, temp- eratures, and time settings with no transference of odour. The Flex also has a split door, so it’s possible to open the top without opening the bottom, or the whole door.

After cooking, refrigeration is the next most important consideration. American side-by-side options continue to prove popular because of their extra capacity. And it’s still the case that consumers are trying to shop less frequently and stock up. As well as capacity, flexible storage is important to consumers, plus technology to maintain food’s fresh- ness, and any antibacterial interior coatings that promote hygiene and keep food fresh for longer. Hygiene of course, is an even greater concern to homeowners than previously.
