Richard Turner, national sales manager for Pronorm UK and Ireland, adds that as broken-plan gains more traction, “we’ll see more use of multifunctional furniture to provide design harmony across the living space, with standalone items such as mid-height units, shelving, glass cabinets and dressers”.

He adds: “A mid-height bank of

units with back-to-back glass elements is an ideal way of breaking up space, providing valuable storage, while still keeping that all important design and social connection.”

means customers have been asking for bigger pantries and it has seen an increase in sales of the storage systems and corner larder solutions, “along with an increase of extra-wide drawers and pull-out larders in modern kitchen designs”.

In its trend report for 2022, Harvey Jones echoes the need for pantries in the contemporary kitchen and adds that having an area for

all kitchen-

specific items that is hidden, but accessible, is a must.

There were still plenty of people moving house during the pandemic and now able to work from home. As a consequence, they have more space for appliances and perhaps more money to spend on them.

Smart appliances

Chris Grundy, product manager at Hoover, notes that “a new home means new appliances and the smart, connected features we are focused on providing with our products can appeal to customers who are wanting to upgrade to fit their new property and lifestyle”. Among these are Hoover’s Collection 3 600mm wi-fi multi-

functional oven and its HMNV 6202XKWIFIN fridge-freezer. DR Kitchen Appliances’ MD Howard Bogod, which distributes Elica in the UK, sees trends moving in a different direction – “towards micro living and the ability to maximise the use of small spaces”, as well as homely, flexible spaces thath can be reconfigured – expanded or contracted – to suit any particular scenario.

In terms of appliance design, there will be a tendency towards the sleek and seamless with high-end finishes such as black glass and brushed metallics dominating. Hygiene will be a big driver, so fewer knobs and dials will be preferable. Wi-Fi connectivity and voice activation will also be desirable.

Where surfaces are concerned, sustainability again will be key, so those that are ultra-durable, hard- wearing and non-porous will likely win out. Floor tiles will be large-format, with fewer grout lines and nooks in which dirt can lurk, while for kitchen walls, small format, brick-shaped tiles are likely to continue to be popular. A recent trend report from Lundhs Real Stone predicts that harsh, sharp lines

will be replaced by smoother

curves and silhouettes and that we’ll see more natural colours and smooth finishes. “This will be demonstrated through the increased use of 100% natural materials, from natural stone worktops to sustainable flooring and even cabinetry,” explains marketing director Hege Lundh.

David Talbot, head of specification at Craven Dunnill, adds: “Walls within bathrooms and other living spaces are seeing a rise in the use of extremely large floor-to-wall porcelain slabs with rich polished calacatta, onyx, marble or travertine styling.

Talbot goes on to say that polished marble-effect porcelain will continue to make a statement in large-format tiles and slabs, while warm wood-effect floor tiles and natural tones will bring nature into the homes, but in a practical and durable way.
