We felt that in order to meet the client’s brief, the space needed a smart, slick design that was neat but also eye-catching. We wanted to incorporate classical references – as appropriate for a period property – but also include the kind of features you’d expect in a contemporary bathroom. The contemporary style is also due to the detail in the design and the fi nishing, as the entire room was set out with all cabinets and niches falling on tile lines, so the visual impression is not only clean and precise, but there are also no unnecessary or visible tile cuts. To meet the client’s functional requirements and to make the room feel spacious, we also needed to devise a clever and hard-working layout. The previous bathroom was in the same location, but was a different shape. Originally, there was also a hot water cylinder in a separate cupboard alongside, which I felt was a waste of valuable space. At the same time, the bathroom came out further into the bedroom than I thought it should and got in the way of natural light. I also felt that both rooms were lacking in adequate storage space. In order to achieve a more spacious, user-friendly, practical layout, we changed the position of the
partitions to suit how the adjoining bedroom and bathroom were designed.
Alongside the basin is the walk-in shower and bath so that all of the wet areas are in one zone. Using large- format porcelain fl oor tiles allowed us to create this walk-in wet area with a neat and seamless transition to the rest of the room. To maximise the space, we tailor-made a variety of storage solutions, such as a bespoke Corian basin with an open, polished steel-framed vanity unit; a custom-made mirror-fronted cabinet with vanity lighting over the basin, and a fi tted oak timber shelving unit in a recess to the right of the basin where towels, toiletries and accessories can be kept and easily accessed.
The basin and mirror cabinet make a strong impression the moment you enter the room and help to make sense of the whole design. Of course the mirror also helps bounce the natural light around, which makes the room naturally feel bigger. To create the luxurious fi nish, we used a combination of Carrara marble with blue Murano glass tiles throughout. The marble offers the classic look that’s very much in keeping with this period property, while the blue Murano glass adds a hit of the client’s favourite colour and complements the character of the marble perfectly.
