Compact living: big appliances for small spaces
Many may aspire to a 40ft kitchen packed with appliances, but Jonathan Hartley, channel manager for kitchen retail and B2B Samsung UK, explains how Samsung’s clever compact appliances can deliver the features customers demand in a smaller space
A
cross the globe, there is a growing trend for compact living, but this does not mean having to compromise on lifestyle. It is most evident from the many Private Rented Sector (PRS) developments soaring into city skylines across the UK, from Edinburgh to London – and it is the same in every other major city we can name. What makes these customers who rent or mortgage a property any different in what they require or aspire to? Nothing. It is a lifestyle choice, so why should they compromise on technology or product functionality?
The solution lies with the design teams of skilled kitchen retailers teaming up with an appliance brand such as Samsung to recognise the needs of the consumer. Samsung offers the flexibility of design in its product portfolio for retailers with clients who need kitchens for new-builds, renovations, PRS and student accommodation, where space is always at a premium. Samsung is not rewriting the rules for appliance
product dimensions, but we are driving product features, form and function within this sector of the market. Here are some key examples of products that meet the requirements of smaller kitchens:
Samsung Dual Cook Flex™ oven – A 75-litre oven with twin cavity and twin independent fans, both working at independent temperatures, yet it does not require the large 895mm cavity of a traditional double oven. The functionality of pyrolytic cleaning and wi-fi connectivity means future-proofed cooking in a package that’s easy to keep looking good as new. It fits in the typical 595mm internal cavity of a single oven, yet is vast in size and features, easy to use and will suit the external aesthetics of any consumer demographic.
Samsung 45cm Slimline Dishwasher – A dishwasher bursting with features for the compact environment and high-rise living. Aqua Stop is a safety function that prevents accidental water leaks. If it detects that the water hose is broken or working incorrectly, it automatically shuts off the supply to stop any damage to your home. Half

Load function easily saves energy with this setting, which allows you to fill and clean just the top or bottom zone. No more waiting for a full dishwasher, as compact living also means sometimes it’s compact washing that’s required – we have this covered. At 47dB, it is going to keep the neighbours happy as well.
Samsung Combination Microwave ovens – Compact and powerful performance providing 50 litres of cooking space. Compact yes, but with massive functionality, with an 800W microwave, or an oven, or both at once. Its pre-stop hinge ensures the door can be closed quietly and safely. It automatically stops at a pre-set level, so it doesn’t shut too quickly and create a loud noise or cause spills or accidents – a real must-have in a compact environment.
Samsung Family Hub™ refrigerator – offers a huge 593 litres of storage space. SpaceMax™ technology creates extra internal capacity without increasing the external dimensions, so there is no need to worry about fitting everything in.
These are just some of the key products that make sure modern compact living doesn’t have to mean reduced functionality within your design or build. With a growing overseas student market, Samsung offers a brand they recognise, engage with and will add value to both their lifestyle and customer experience.
