A EDITOR’S COMMENT
SMALL SPACES: BIG OPPORTUNITIES?
ccording to the ‘Shrinking Homes’ report published by Which? last year, the average size of UK houses has shrunk by 20% since the Seventies – and new homes being built in the current decade are smaller than ever before. Of course, this decrease in house sizes also means that the rooms inside are getting more compact too. Add to that the fact that – with urban living on the rise – more and more people are living in fl ats or apartments and you have a signifi cant trend on your hands.
While this naturally presents kitchen, bedroom and bathroom manufacturers and designers with challenges, if understood and approached in the right way, it also opens up plenty of business opportunities. With that in mind, this month’s issue takes a closer look at the trend for compact living and offers – we hope – some food for thought on how best to tackle the design in these tricky-sized rooms in order to boost business.
Our compact living focus includes an interview with American Brent Heavener, the creator of @tinyhouse on Instagram and author of Tiny House: Live Small, Dream Big, where he gives insights into designing for small homes (pg 28).
Out-of-the- box thinking provides designers
with the most inspiration
Often, it’s out-of-the-box thinking that provides designers with the most inspiration. So, we’ve also included an interesting chat with two yacht designers (pgs 36-37). Experts in designing luxury kitchens and bathrooms in tight spaces, Anders Berg, a partner at Dixons Yacht Design in Hampshire, and interior designer Tim Gosling explain what the yacht world can teach KBB showrooms about designing for small spaces. We explore the biggest challenges of small kitchens and bathrooms and get some valuable insight into the latest space-saving solutions available in our compact kitchen (pgs 39-42) and compact bathroom (pgs 44-45) features. We also put two kitchen and bathroom designers fi rmly under the spotlight. Both fi nalists in this year’s kbbreview Retail & Design Awards 2019 – Alan Craighead, of Craighead and Woolf in Edinburgh (pg 47) and Stephen Dick, of Residence Interiors in Hampshire (pg 48), explain how they were able to create their clients’ dream kitchen and bathroom
despite the challenges of a small room.
Elsewhere in the issue we visit the Ivan Simpson Bathrooms and Kitchens showroom in Pity Me, County Durham (pgs 58-60) to hear why his decision to diversify into kitchens is paying dividends. We also hear from Fari Zanjani, the owner of Hampstead Kitchens, about why competition from other showrooms on London’s Finchley Road is helping drive his business forward.
