World Helicopter Day Event Locations Continue To Grow

Boeing to Build MH-47G Block II Chinooks for Special Ops

Boeing will build next-generation MH- 47G Chinooks for the U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command. The Block II configuration will enhance the Army’s ability to safely carry out the most challenging missions around the world.

The $194 million contract is for a second lot of MH-47G Block II aircraft, to be delivered starting in 2021. Block II Chinooks feature technological advancements to extend the fleet’s service life and enhance performance.

“The MH-47G is the world’s best, most reliable heavy-lift helicopter and will help Special Operations execute their difficult missions,” said Chuck Dabundo, vice president and MH-47 program manager. “Nearly a quarter of the Special Ops fleet is now on contract for Block II, and we look forward to delivering this capability to them on schedule.”

The Army has a large number of MH-47G Chinook helicopters. Boeing is now on contract for a total of 15 MH-47G Block II Chinooks. The first MH-47G Block II aircraft is scheduled to begin final assembly this year.

The global helicopter industry is celebrating one of the world’s greatest engineering inventions Aug. 18 with rolling events in 15 different locations in eight different time zones.

World Helicopter Day aims to raise awareness of the helicopter’s contributions to society and celebrate the diversity of people who design, fly, and support them.

Every day, thousands of people rely on helicopters for rescue, disaster relief, transport, firefighting, medical transfers, power-line maintenance, tourism, agriculture, and many other roles.

Few people get to see helicopters up close or have the opportunity to talk to the people who work with them. Planned events will give local communities the opportunity to inspect several different helicopters, discover more about how helicopters fly, and learn about careers in the helicopter industry.

This is World Helicopter Day’s fifth year, and international interest is expanding each year.

Following the introduction of the industry- leading DVCS6100 digital intercom system in 2008, Becker Avionics now offers the innovative AMU6500.

This new-generation digital intercom system incorporates several advanced features such as 3D audio technology and Bluetooth compatibility. 3D audio allows for customizable left- or right-channel separation into crew helmets or headsets for corresponding left or right engine or system(s) malfunction(s). Selectable channel separation of left or right audio radio frequencies for complex missions with multiple radio frequency operations is also available. Enhanced safety and efficiency by reducing crew workload, along with improving situational awareness, were primary design considerations of the AMU6500.

Additionally, the AMU6500 digital intercom provides for Bluetooth pairing of cell phones, MP3 players, or tactical headsets that have this capability. The new system can control up to 12 separate radios with a weight and space reduction by integrating the Remote Electronic Unit (REU) into the intercom head that otherwise would be installed on the avionics rack.
