DiMH 2023 PREVIEW An informed approach to strategic planning

Medical Architecture is keen to speak to NHS Trusts about ‘the challenges they are facing in providing capacity for mental health services against the backdrop of competing demands for capital investment’. The practice said: “Through our work

across the country, we understand the shortfall in available beds, particularly for children and young people, eating disorders, perinatal, and specialist learning disabilities services, and the pressure on estates from increasing levels of backlog maintenance, and limited funding availability. Through an informed approach to strategic planning, we work closely with Trusts to develop a clear

design, with a practical understanding of the factors that make healthcare infrastructure clinically, operationally, and environmentally effective. The resulting investments and facilities are designed sustainably, with the flexibility to adapt to changing service requirements. “Ultimately, we focus on creating

vision for their estate, establishing a long-term development framework which extracts maximum value from the existing building stock. We combine the latest thinking in estate planning and healthcare

Standing out from the crowd ‘in its DNA’, says Poppi

Poppi Contract Furniture is known for its experience supplying furniture into challenging environments, has recently achieved carbon-neutral status as a business, and says that ‘looking at ways to stand out from the competition’ is ‘in its DNA’. The company has recently launched the new

‘Zante’ compact chair (pictured), which it says has ‘all the built-in features you would expect for secure environments’. These include fully boarded frame and underside, and anti-tamper screws. The chair’s weight can also be taken up to 65

kg, while it has a small footprint – measuring just 800 mm high, 490 mm wide, and 580 mm deep, with a seat height of 500 mm. The ‘versatile’ chair is available with enclosed padded arms and – Poppi says – ‘can be used in a multitude of areas’.

Giving service-users more autonomy

and easier interaction Recornect ‘provides innovative hardware and software solutions to improve psychiatric care, mental healthcare, and care in correctional facilities’. It said: “CoWin (see photo) and GRASP

offer clients and care staff new, innovative tools for faster de-escalation, and powerful communication capabilities. Recornect is achieving extraordinary results worldwide with significantly fewer instances of seclusion, faster recovery, and more scope for preventing incidents of distress and aggression.”

Founded by healthcare professionals and engineers with years of practical experience in mental healthcare, Recornect claims to be ‘leading the global trend of focusing more on the autonomy and individual needs of clients in crisis’. Its latest product, the CoWin Play (see also page 5), was developed following years of experience with its CoWin 32/48 ‘media wall’ – a de-escalation solution created for use primarily in medium secure and forensic mental healthcare environments. It explained: “Its success prompted demand for a similar solution for lower secure and disability care settings. The CoWin Play media wall is a balanced mix of interaction, education, entertainment, and control. It is built very rigidly, but has a finish for a lower level of security, making it more affordable, and therefore more accessible.” Recornect’s CoWin media wall and

GRASP software platform have been deployed in over 100 healthcare facilities in 12 countries.

therapeutic environments that promote wellbeing and recovery. We believe strongly in the regenerative power of nature, and prioritising access to outside space. We thus ensure that architecture and landscape are integrated and combined with complementary strategies for interior design and art, to create therapeutic spaces inside and out.”

BioPod IPS ‘world’s first antimicrobial modular IPS unit’

Hygienic wall cladding specialist, BioClad, says it has ‘pioneered’ the world’s first antimicrobial modular integrated plumbing system (IPS), BioPod, allowing healthcare providers and other organisations to ‘dramatically reduce microbial growth within their washrooms’. The BioPod IPS

features a patent- pending design that utilises silver-ion antimicrobial technology to inhibit microbial growth. BioClad says microbes that come into contact with a BioPod unit are ‘instantly supressed’, and 80% are eradicated within the first 15 minutes of contact, increasing to 99.99% after just two hours. The new BioPod Acute incorporates

reinforced access doors, high secure locks, a sloping top design, reinforced corner protection for extra strength, and anti-ligature doors. To further enhance their hygienic qualities, BioPod IPS units feature an 18 mm closed-cell PVC BioCore. The use of closed-cell technology ensures that the units are 100% waterproof, and not susceptible to rot and water damage. Using 18 mm PVC ensures that they are durable, rigid, and ‘made to last’. BioClad added: “BioPod is a

bespoke IPS unit. It can be built in any shape and size, and is available in 27 aesthetically pleasing different colours – from neutral greys to bold greens, guaranteeing the perfect match for all applications.”
