DESIGN IN MENTAL HEALTH 2023

DiMHN’s flagship event set to celebrate 10 years

The Network looks ahead to some of the highly topical conference themes, the biggest exhibition in the event’s history – showcasing some of the mental healthcare sector’s latest products and technologies – and an evening ceremony which will see 11 awards presented, at next month’s Design in Mental Health event, taking place at the Coventry Building Society Arena from 7-8 June.

The conference at Design in Mental Health this year celebrates 10 years of the event. Among the major conference themes for 2023 will be: Person-centred approaches to design and care; Collaboration and partnership innovation; Clinical and operational learning; Safety and psychologically informed environments; Design, estates, facilities, and equipment learning, and Policy, research, and standards. The themes span both days of the event, giving conference delegates a fantastic learning opportunity whether they attend on either or both days.

Keynote sessions There are four keynote sessions across the two-day conference. Chris Dzikiti, director of Mental Health at the CQC, will give an update on the work of the Commission, and Andy Johnston from Andy Johnston Associates, together with Keith Reid – a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist – will present Towards Safer Services 2022 – cross-sector strategic guidance to reduce the use of restraint. Susan Grant from NHS Scotland Assure, and Mark Richards from the Scottish Mental Health and Social Care Directorate, will talk about the development of a tool to assess the quality and safety of mental health estates, and Dan Burningham from the NHS North East ICB will cover designing a digital pathway for severe mental illness. The newly appointed CEO of the Design in Mental Health Network, Hannah Chamberlain, will also give an address, appropriately titled ‘DIMH, 10 years’ young’. The presentation from Dr Laura

Design-led sessions Design-led sessions will cover many facets of the collaboration that goes into designing mental health treatment facilities, including one titled ‘Integrated Art in Mental Health Architecture’ by Stence Guldanger at Arkitema, who will discuss the positive impact on the healing environment of the integration of art with architecture. Ruari Reeves and Karl Burton

– from Medical Architecture, and Scott Tallon Walker Architects respectively, will explain the design principles behind the new National Forensic Hospital in Dublin (see The Network – February 2023), a new forest-based high secure treatment facility where the environment is one of the core features of the healing process. An international perspective on design from Denmark will look at the impact of design on both aggression and recovery in a new forensic psychiatric hospital, and focus on some of the key architectural and design features identified in studies as essential to minimising aggression. Rosemary Jenssen, the appointed Technical co- author on updates to the mental health design and Health Building Notes, will run through ongoing work on the Adult and Children and Young People supplements for Low and Medium Secure environments.
