PRODUCTS Integrated workflow system

Cantel and Lyngsoe Systems have won a seven-year contract to supply NHS Lothian with new software to help manage and track sterile assets across the health board. Cantel will be supplying its new Canexis integrated workflow solution which links data and decision-making to support the efficient operation of critical hospital departments. It brings together differing departmental software into one tool and is available for endoscopy, sterilisation and surgical departments. The system will launch within the sterile

processing department at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh and extend out to endoscopy, dental and local decontamination units and operating theatres throughout the Health Board. Lyngsoe Systems will be supplying the X-Tracking location tracking software which will track and trace the RFID tagged surgical sets, endoscopes and equipment kits as they move between the different hospitals and storage facilities. Integration of these two software systems will provide full visibility of tray sets, endoscopes and other sterile goods as they leave the sterilisation and decontamination departments and record them arriving at the remote storage facilities spread across the health board. The X-Tracking software will also be used to help keep track of the health boards large inventory of medical devices. The clinical engineering team have already started deploying new RFID embedded GS1 asset labels to their medical devices and will be integrating the X-Tracking software with their Medusa asset management software.

Enhancing the healing environment in children’s wards

Receiving treatment in hospital can be a stressful experience, especially for children. Medstor has developed a special mobile module cart for children’s wards that uses bright colours and cheerful cartoon-style jungle images, to help distract the young patients from the treatment they are receiving, making a potentially difficult time a little easier.

The Medstor graphic design team started by researching the colours and shapes that appeal to children. The design was then transferred to a transparent PVC film containing antimicrobial agents and coated with a pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive, specially designed for use in areas that require a high level of hygiene. It has no allergenic or irritant potential, so is absolutely safe for use around young patients.

Pressure management range

The Action range of pressure ulcer prevention products is exclusively available in the UK from Central Medical Supplies Ltd (CMS). Action

uses its patented Akton viscoelastic polymer for its pressure ulcer prevention products. The polymer is designed to prevent capillary closure through the redistribution of pressure, mitigate shear forces and reduce the risk of tissue trauma. Akton is a latex free composite and resistant to infectious growth, as well as being flame and leak resistant.

Action has been a pioneer of the polymer pressure ulcer management market for over 40 years. The Action range features numerous pads designed for every surgical procedure. Products include theatre table overlays, head pads, chest rolls, heel supports and paediatric positioners.

Delivering safe

patient care Delivering blood and blood products to patients is a common and key process within healthcare environments. BD Alaris infusion pumps have been verified for safe delivery of blood components and do not damage blood cells or platelets in a clinically significant manner.1-5 Implementing the use of BD Alaris infusion pumps for blood transfusions could improve patient safety,6,7

increase clinician

and contribute to reduced costs.8 BD also offers a range of dedicated blood sets for all pump platforms. This includes a closed neonatal blood set which allows you to give blood transfusions to paediatric and neonatal patient, in line with ‘The administration of blood components: a British Society for Haematology Guidelines’.9 References available upon request.

Anaesthetic face mask

Intersurgical’s ClearLite is a new range of phthalate- and PVC-free anaesthetic face masks available with - or without - a hook ring, offering a clear choice to reduce your impact on the environment.

The range is lightweight and clear with a

colour-coded seal for ease of size selection. The range is available in seven sizes - from 0 (neonatal) through to size 6 (large adult). Due to the anatomical design and flexible, non-inflatable cuff, the ClearLite mask is said to offer superior seal performance with minimum pressure, reducing the risk of unnecessary discomfort and potential trauma. The seal can also assist the clinician in providing optimum manual ventilation of the patient in both the anaesthetic and emergency situation.
