CLINICAL RESEARCH

symptomatic and disease modifying treatments.” The latest figures from NIHR show that patients have more opportunity than ever to take part in clinical research - with every single NHS Trust in the country offering their patients the opportunity to take part in CRN studies.

Dr Jonathan Sheffield said: “As an organisation, we have striven to ensure that research is taking place across the whole of the National Health Service in England. Last year for the first time since 2015/16 - 100% of NHS Trusts - acute, mental health and community hospitals - were involved in our research. It is particularly pleasing to see that research is prevailing across the NHS. But this trend is also reflected in what is happening in primary care - with over 40% of GP practices involved in research over the last year.”

The NIHR Clinical Research Network has

seen year-on-year growth in research participation numbers each year since 2015. However, the increase in the number of people taking part in studies this year is by far the greatest that the organisation has ever seen.

Dr Clare Morgan, research delivery director at the NIHR CRN, explained some of the reasons behind the growth in the number of participants: “There has been a significant increase in people accessing research opportunities this year compared to last - up by 20% since 2017/18. “This is explained by the ongoing growth in the number of new studies open for participation across all clinical areas and NHS Trusts. It equates to: 2194 new studies (compared to 2070 in 2017/18), and 5126 studies actively recruiting (compared to 4901 in 2017/18), with 6106 studies in total open on the CRN’s portfolio (compared to 5804 in the previous year). “In addition, this year there has been a 5% annual increase in the number of large studies which have recruited more than 1000 participants. This is reflected by 11 large studies contributing 22% of the total annual recruitment.”

Improving the delivery of research

Dr Clare Morgan, heads up the part of the NIHR CRN responsible for delivering clinical research across the NHS and other settings. The NIHR CRN oversees policies, processes and initiatives to improve the delivery of research. At the heart of its activities is the NIHR CRN Portfolio of studies which consists of clinical research studies eligible for consideration for support from the CRN in England. This is all done through the framework of the NIHR’s Study Support Service - which helps researchers and the life sciences industry plan, set up and deliver high quality research to time and target in both the NHS and the wider health and social care environment, across England.

AUGUST 2019

Clare explained how the CRN has helped

to support the phenomenal growth in research across England last year: “The Study Support Service is offered for all studies eligible for NIHR CRN support, regardless of location, study type, study size, therapy or research area, medical, diagnostic, pharmaceutical, bio-tech or

studies looking at healthy populations or people with social care needs.

“Ensuring that studies recruit on time and to target is fundamental to the delivery of high quality research. The support that the CRN provides - on both a national and local level - plays a vital role in ensuring studies can recruit effectively and efficiently. In turn,
