DIAGNOS TICS
personalised control over the theme selection that defines the colour and intensity of the ambient lighting, as well as the audio- video content in the room, the patients’ involvement and engagement in procedures is encouraged. However, the benefits not only extend to patients – Philips Ambient Experience environments have been shown to decrease the duration of procedures, while also helping caregivers to work more efficiently and with more satisfaction.2 Ultimately, to deliver the increase in diagnostic activity required now and over the coming years, and to provide safe, patient-centred pathways for diagnostics, new service models are needed. It is anticipated that three hubs per million population should be established initially (broadly equivalent to the number of acute hospitals).1
This new hub is a first step
towards tackling waiting lists and providing services where they are most needed. Fredrik Gyllenram, global head, international key account management, Royal Philips, believes the centre will make a significant difference to the people of Somerset: “The healthcare system is strained,” he commented. “Diagnostic centres will have a paramount impact on how we reduce the pressure on secondary and tertiary care by
expanding and making care available within the local community.” Dr. Dan Meron, chief medical officer, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, is equally confident that the new hub will increase capacity: “We will be able to see people quicker and give them the right treatment and the right diagnostics, with the best equipment,” he concluded.
