ARAB HEALTH 20 2 2
the health technology sector in the UK. The ABHI UK Pavilion – which remains one of the biggest national pavilions at the show – is a vibrant hub of activity dedicated to showcasing the latest technology and talent, giving visitors a chance to see everything from live surgical demonstrations to product showcases and launches; activities which always draw sizeable crowds to the pavilion. This year, though taking place within an environment of enhanced safety measures, is shaping up to be no different. ABHI International managing director,
Paul Benton, comments: “The health technology sector has matured; devices, diagnostics and digital technologies have become increasingly sophisticated and treatment for the likes of cancer and stroke are now quicker and more targeted, supporting improved survival rates and life expectancy. The UK is leading the way, and this will be demonstrated by the number of Digital Health companies exhibiting at this year’s Arab Health. “As people live longer, we are experiencing a rise in chronic conditions, meaning there is a bigger emphasis on our ability to predict, identify, diagnose and treat patients as early as possible to prevent, manage or halt disease progression. “The ABHI UK Pavilion provides an
important platform for the country’s trailblazing HealthTech companies to showcase their technologies and talent and the important contribution they can make when it comes to tackling some of these big challenges.” Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic sparked a digital boom in healthcare globally. In the UK, it has been an accelerator to the implementation of many digital health products and services, from the uptake of remote consultations to help clinicians tackle the pressures of COVID, to the scaling up of AI tools. In addition to this, there has been the growth of UK’s domestic diagnostics industry, which is contributing to rapidly sequencing emerging viral variants. Paul adds: “It’s not all apps, robots and telemedicine though. There are currently over 11,000 Digital Health employees working in the UK; applying their trade to infrastructure projects, such as hospital and GP information systems. Programmes that will equip services, such as the UK’s NHS, to deliver on what is arguably its prize asset: its data. “When we consider the proximity of the world-class research institutions to the NHS, the country has a unique advantage over its global competitors and is highly regarded overseas. International markets continue to view the UK as a ‘stamp of quality’, and vice versa, UK businesses are eager to demonstrate their credentials on the world-stage, to bring their technologies to new countries and support improved patient outcomes internationally.
“Once again, we are proud to be hosting a fantastic line up of companies, who are keen to find exciting new opportunities to develop their business in the Middle East and beyond.”
Simulated operating theatre The ABHI UK Pavilion will be located in Hall 2 at Arab Health 2022 and alongside the businesses exhibiting there is a busy programme of activity planned to showcase the strengths of the UK’s vibrant HealthTech sector. Taking centre stage within the ABHI UK pavilion will once again be the state-of-the art simulated operating theatre. It celebrates collaborations between healthcare providers, clinicians and healthcare technology companies, allowing visitors to watch Britain’s best surgeons in action. At the 2019 show, cutting-edge doctor
Professor Shafi Ahmed performed virtual reality and augmented reality surgery on the UK Pavilion. Dubbed the “world’s most watched surgeon” due to the live streaming of one of his surgeries, Professor Ahmed is just one example of the forward-thinking clinical experts the UK boasts and ABHI are delighted to be hosting an equally impressive line-up this time around.
In previous years, visitors have also been able to see a range of fascinating demonstrations up close and in action, from a unique virtual reality training tool that delivers immersive simulations with haptic (sense of touch) technology, delivered by London-based FundamentalVR, to ground-breaking paediatric cardiac surgery, performed live by surgeons from the internationally acclaimed Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Paul adds: “The ABHI operating theatre, housed in the ABHI support stand, provides a fantastic platform for world-class UK clinicians to showcase their skills and leading providers to engage and educate visitors. “From the essential everyday products, such as sticking plasters and surgical instruments, through to hip and knee implants, pacemakers and MRI machines, we are seeing products increasingly

incorporate new fields of science, utilising data, artificial intelligence, robotics and nanomaterials. The industry is integral to the delivery of modern healthcare, supporting better patient outcomes and improved efficiencies within healthcare systems around the globe.”
Best of British HealthTech Complementing this programme of activity will be exciting product showcases, with a number of companies joining the UK Pavilion to launch an array of disruptive technologies and services, from cutting- edge patient monitoring software to apps improving mental health and wellbeing and ground-breaking patient consultation platforms.
Overall, a total of 80 leading healthcare businesses, renowned hospital groups and esteemed clinicians from world-leading clinics will form the UK delegation travelling to the Middle East to showcase ‘the very best’ of UK HealthTech at Arab Health 2022. The list of exhibitors on the ABHI UK
Pavilion this year includes some of the most forward-thinking companies from the sector who will be at hand to demonstrate why UK HealthTech is world-leading:
Abtrace – This London-based health tech company’s aim is to use machine learning and clinical innovation to reshape the delivery of primary care. It will be showcasing its cloud-based software, which tracks the patient’s conditions, medications and tests undertaken to improve control of chronic conditions. The software summarises all the monitoring a patient needs in an instant – providing valuable data to the doctor co-ordinating their care. Used by NHS primary care health centres, the system has been shown to improve the care delivered to patients, while reducing costs to the health system. The Abtrace team has spent three years building state-of-the-art algorithms and connecting into existing healthcare systems to achieve UKCA and CE mark for the product as a certified medical device.
The AHSN Network – The AHSN Network is returning to Arab Health in 2022 as part of ABHI’s UK Pavilion, having attended for the first time in 2019. The 15 Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) across England were established in 2012 by NHS England to spread innovation at pace and scale. They support and collaborate their health and care partners to deliver improvements that lead to better patient outcomes, drive down the cost of care, and stimulate economic growth. The Network’s objectives for attending the show are three-fold. The main goal is to support the successful introduction of five of the best UK healthtech innovators to the international market.
