ARAB HEALTH 20 2 2
UK HealthTech pioneers reunite at Arab Health
The UK Pavilion is heading back to Arab Health in January 2022. The show – one of the world’s leading platforms for international trade in the healthcare sector – represents a huge opportunity for UK healthcare manufacturers and providers to showcase the very best of talent and innovation to a global audience. This month, CSJ spoke to ABHI’s managing director, International, Paul Benton, about the array of technologies, services and surgical simulations being showcased on the ABHI UK Pavilion.
Technology and innovation are set to take centre stage at this year’s Arab Health, where the global healthcare industry is set to unite again from 24-27 January 2022 under the theme ‘United by business, forging ahead’. Established 46 years ago, the event has long provided an important platform for leading UK companies across the health technology sector to connect with the medical and scientific community in the Middle East and showcase how their innovations can help to tackle some of the big challenges in modern healthcare. Ageing populations, higher life expectancy, in addition to an increase in obesity, cancer and diabetes, continue to have significant implications for health systems globally. In the Middle East and North Africa region, non-communicable diseases such as heart disease (up by 44%), stroke (up 35%), and diabetes (up 87%) are causing more premature death and disability than they did in the past.1
The response to these increasingly complex challenges continues to rely on the availability of equitable, affordable, and high-quality health services. Within this, the importance of harnessing innovation and technology remains key to delivering significant transformation and enabling the healthcare industry to forge ahead, even after the immediate disruptions of COVID-19 have passed. As important is the need for global collaboration and creating the opportunities to strengthen this – and this is where Arab Health makes its mark.
Supporting innovation in healthcare Taking place at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Arab Health is the largest event of its kind in the MENA region. The show this

year will feature over 4,000 companies showcasing their latest innovations to over 130,000 healthcare professionals from a total of 163 countries.
Thousands of medical products and solutions which are changing the healthcare landscape will be on display throughout four days, from state-of-the-art imaging equipment to the most cost-effective disposables, to the latest developments in surgery and advances in prosthetics. The show is dedicated to helping create meaningful connections and support innovation in healthcare, bringing the healthcare industry together to learn, network and trade – things that have been drastically impacted by the advent of COVID-19 and the hold on exhibitions that was put in place across the globe due to lockdown measures over the last two years.
Nonetheless, the event went ahead in 2021, albeit with strict health and safety measures in place, and conversations, though in-person, took place behind masks. In light of
the pandemic, the show – which was one of the first in-person exhibitions to take place in Dubai this year – was postponed to June, but still managed to attract an impressive 2,500 companies from 85 countries. A marked exception was the delegation from the UK. This year, however, promises to be different. With international travel opened up
again, the UK Pavilion will be back in full force in January 2022, with an impressive list of companies eager to meet international buyers and partners, with the aim to extend the benefits of their innovations to the thriving Middle East market.
Showcasing the latest technologies Now in its 47th year, Arab Health features 39 country pavilions, including the United Kingdom. Each year, the show attracts over 106,500 visitors, generating US$824 million in business. For over 11 years the largest UK Pavilion has been organised by the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) – a leading industry association for
