IHEEM’S SPECIAL HEALTHCARE AWARD TO BE PRESENTED AT BIG BANG FAIR 2025
From 17-19 June this year IHEEM is delighted to be exhibiting as part of the Big Bang Fair at the Birmingham NEC, a STEM event which draws over 20,000 young people to engage with organisations, workshops, and live shows from across the full spectrum of science, technology, and engineering.
The Big Bang Fair is free, and is open to UK state-funded school groups only, in:
• Year 6 to year 8 (England and Wales). • P7 to S2 (Scotland). • Year 7 to year 9 (Northern Ireland).
On the first day of the Big Bang Fair,
the prize for the IHEEM Innovation in Wellbeing and Healthcare Engineering Award will also be presented, as part of the Big Bang Competition. The Institute’s Special Award, launched for the first time this year, offers entrants the opportunity to explore challenges within the healthcare landscape, and find solutions through creative design and problem solving. Further details on the competition process and judging criteria will be published in next month’s Training and Development section in HEJ. For the 2025 Big Bang Fair, IHEEM is proud to be partnering with some exceptional organisations, which have offered their time and resources to support the IHEEM stand, and inspire young people with interactive activities and experiments relating to healthcare engineering. Affiliates from the Institutes of Technology, Tarkett, Brandon Medical, Stephen George + Partners, and PPL Training, are generously providing industry-leading technology and hands-on
equipment to demonstrate the exciting and extensive range of opportunities to contribute to healthcare through an engineering lens.
Through these partnerships, students will be able to experience first-hand the application of engineering, including the development of virtual reality headsets which support the design of dementia care wards, operating theatre lighting and ventilation systems, and cutting edge technological advancements seen in 3D printing and robotics.
The exhibition space will be supported
over three days by the IHEEM Head Office team, members of the Institute’s Big Bang
IHEEM BIG BANG FAIR PARTNERS
Programme Group, and member volunteers, all of whom will be on hand to facilitate the operation of equipment, as well as engage with students about connections between the activities and real-world implementation.
Wanting to aid
people’s care Previous research by EngineeringUK has found that there is an increasing trend, notably since the COVID-19 pandemic, in young people’s interest in engaging with STEM subjects from the perspective of wanting to help care for people. It is the ambition of the Institute that by bringing together such exemplary models of medical innovation, attendees will be inspired to learn more about career paths and work opportunities to become future leaders within the healthcare engineering sector.
