TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Developing STEM strategy

Martyn Jeffery, independent engineering management consultant and IHEEM South West Branch Chair, spoke about his career progression, which included time as Director of Estates at the Royal Free Hospital in north London.

and the career of an engineer looks like – and also offer an insight into the various subsectors of engineering. “We were fortunate to receive an

informative talk from former IHEEM President, and Chair of the Institute’s Mechanical Technical Platform, Alison Ryan, and Martyn Jeffery, Council member and Chair of the South West Branch. They gave an informative talk about their career history, career pathways, and employability, as well as an insight into engineering in general, and the importance of choosing a course that feeds in to becoming chartered. We learnt about a whole industry that I knew absolutely nothing about. The talk included how power and heating requirements and efficiency have changed over time, which was informative for all of the students, regardless of the career they end up in.”

There is no doubt that the drive and passion expressed for STEM within academic institutions such as Exeter

Mathematics School, and throughout their student bodies, provide a captive audience for presenting some of the benefits and opportunities available to young people within a healthcare engineering career.

Making the many career

opportunities ‘visible’ It’s nevertheless pertinent to recall the following when understanding the mission of all stakeholders tasked with developing the next generation of the healthcare engineering and EFM workforce: ‘If you can’t see it, then you can’t be it’. While heartening to experience such an appetite and authentic engagement for STEM delivered in a dedicated learning environment, it is crucial as an industry to ensure that we are maximising our efforts, and calling on our networks to engage directly with those who have every potential to be future leaders. Fittingly, emblazoned on the walls of the presentation room at the EMS, a

similar sentiment is echoed to students: ‘However impenetrable it seems, if you don’t try it, then you can never do it’. A lesson too in the need for a unified and supportive approach to effective careers inspiration; It is not only crucial to make options visible, but to make them feel possible, and to facilitate and present an environment where young professionals can indeed ‘try it’, but also go on to thrive in their chosen career. As a valuable setting to inspire learners already in the earliest stages of their professional development, choosing to explore the many avenues available in STEM-related disciplines, IHEEM looks forward to collaborating with the University Maths School Network more in the future.
