STEM DELIVERY AT EXETER MATHEMATICS SCHOOL

A number of IHEEM personnel with a keen interest in training and career development recently visited a sixth-form school in Exeter for those with a special affinity for maths, physics, and computing, to impart some of their experience, and discuss some of the exciting roles in healthcare engineering at a key juncture in the youngsters’ lives as they consider their next steps in higher education or routes into their chosen careers.

In late 2024, IHEEM was invited by EngineeringUK to connect with Exeter Mathematics School (EMS), which was looking to build on its programme of careers talks for students. As it continues to expand its STEM outreach activity, the Institute was keen to support in showcasing professional opportunities and career pathways from across the healthcare engineering sector. The school, located in Exeter city

centre, is an Ofsted Outstanding, state- funded sixth form specially designed for young people who love maths, physics, and computing. It is one of 10 University Mathematics Schools planned to be operational by 2026, all founded by, and closely linked to, leading universities, with EMS supported by Exeter University and Exeter College. These schools each offer a specialist STEM curriculum, promising ‘social mobility’, and ‘working with

students from under-represented groups to widen participation in high-quality STEM degrees and careers’. On arrival in late January, IHEEM

Past-President, Alison Ryan, South West Branch Chair, Martyn Jeffery, and Professional Development Manager, Zanna Mercer, were welcomed and shown around EMS by Assistant Head Teacher, Liam Cantle. During the tour, a relaxed, positive atmosphere was evident, with

Inspirational quotes feature at Exeter Mathematics School, such as in the laboratories. 10 Health Estate Journal March 2025
