Trust’s largest capital scheme under way in Scarborough
Last month saw a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the official start of a £47 m scheme to build a new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre at Scarborough Hospital – the largest capital scheme ever undertaken by the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Enabling works in readiness for the build have already begun, with the new centre planned to open in Spring 2024. Attendances at Scarborough Emergency Department have increased at around five per cent year on year for over a decade. The new- build will provide much-needed extra space, and enable patients with anything from minor to complex needs to be looked after by one team of healthcare professionals. The centre will have its own dedicated diagnostic zone providing CT scans, general X-ray, and ultrasound. Dr Ed Smith, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and deputy Medical director at the Trust, said: “When the existing Emergency Department opened at Scarborough Hospital in 1985 the annual attendance was 15,000 patients.
CW+ charity artwork a ‘touchpoint in time’
Illustrator and reportage artist, Emily Thomas, has been working with CW+, the official charity of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, as part of her residency at West Middlesex University Hospital, producing a collection of illustrations which capture and celebrate the workforce there. Her work revolves around direct

new-build combining and expanding the current Emergency Department, same day emergency care, and the acute medical unit. Alongside improving outcomes for the frail elderly, it will also ensure that some of the hospital’s most critically ill patients are cared for in one integrated clinical ward environment, rather than being moved to other wards. The second floor will house critical care services, and will increase bed capacity. The scheme also includes work to address essential site-wide engineering infrastructure.
Wates Smartspace completes second fit-out at Winchester hospital
National property service provider, Wates Smartspace, has completed its second fit-out project at Winchester’s Royal Hampshire County Hospital, providing substantial upgrades to the hospital’s Pathology Department.
Work included upgrading the mechanical and electrical services across two floors, and an extension of the suite’s office area. The project – procured via the Crown Commercial Services Construction and Associated Services Agreement – will allow the installation of new specialised equipment serving the hospital’s Blood Sciences departments. Wates Smartspace was appointed by Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation NHS Trust to deliver the fit- out works following its delivery of a new robotic pharmacy, which was completed last year.
Scott Camp, Wates Smartspace’s MD, said: “We’re delighted to complete another project at the Royal Hampshire

Having only recently completed the robotic pharmacy fit-out, we had a solid understanding of our client’s needs, which was fundamental to us delivering the service safely and efficiently, while keeping disruption to a minimum.”
Wates Smartspace has worked with a variety of leading pharmaceutical companies, medical research organisations, and NHS Trusts, as well as banks, retailers, property developers, broadcasters, and owners and occupiers of commercial offices and public sector organisations. Project values range from £20,000 to £25 m.
observation and discovery, and for this commission, she has been drawing staff at work across the hospital since October 2021, producing a large quantity of drawings which ‘capture the hospital’s daily workings, busy moments, calm moments, and many friendly conversations’. CW+ says she has built strong connections with staff, describing her drawings as ‘a touchpoint in time, reflecting the diverse workforce and community spirit of staff’. The project forms part of a wider
exhibition CW+ is developing ‘to mark the rich heritage’ of ‘West Mid’ as part of the hospital’s 100-year celebration funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The display will become a permanent feature in the entrance, and, along with Emily Thomas’s drawings, will reflect key moments of the hospital’s past, photographs, and future plans. A recent graduate, Emily Thomas
started working with CW+ and the Trust as a student through the charity’s partnership with University of the West Of England, and has previously been an artist in residence at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, creating artwork to capture the life of volunteers there, which has been exhibited as part of a CW+ ‘Arts in Health’ exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery.
