Changing the way that hospitals manage nitrous oxide
BeaconMedaes and Medclair have announced what they dub ‘an exciting new partnership’ that they say ‘will totally change the way hospitals manage nitrous oxide (N2O)’. BeaconMedaes
is to be the sole UK supplier of Medclair’s ‘low-energy’ Central Destruction Unit (CDU), which reportedly provides ‘sustainable gas cleaning of exhaled nitrous oxide’, reducing it by more than 99% by causing it to decompose rapidly into nitrogen and oxygen. The two companies say the surrounding environment is made safer for staff and patients ‘without any reduction in the level of pain relief provided’. Key benefits of the CDU include:
n Facilitates a healthy working environment for the personnel.
n Effective pain treatment using an ‘environmentally-friendly’ system.
n Eliminates over 99% of nitrous oxide entering the atmosphere.
n Each unit can serve up to 12 rooms. n Low noise level and no vibrations. n Low energy consumption. n Monitoring through the web and/or on site.
n Easy to install.
Economic steam generation from new Classic
Heat transfer specialist, Fulton, says its new Classic builds on the successes of its 70-year boiler manufacturing history ‘to deliver a vertical steam boiler that is engineered to meet our customers’ requirements’.
BeaconMedaes said: “Newcastle’s
Royal Victoria Infirmary is leading the way in sustainable, safe management of exhaled nitrous oxide, with the first UK CDU installation. The hospital already uses a Mobile Destruction Unit on its labour ward, but the larger CDU means that this technology can now be delivered site-wide, with exhaled nitrous oxide from up to 12 rooms treated and vented safely.” Exhaled air is passed from the face mask into a ‘climate-smart’ catalytic purification system, where the nitrous oxide gas is decomposed into harmless nitrogen (N2
) and air (O2 ), and can be
safely vented into the atmosphere. The operation is continuously monitored. Data is logged and can be accessed easily via the built-in display or a standardised web interface.
An evolution of Fulton’s original vertical tubeless design, Classic is ‘simple, compact, and built to last’, and is backed by a pedigree of over 100,000 boilers installed worldwide. Available with gas, oil, or LPG/Propane burners, Classic is available with outputs from 100-300 kW (160 to 480 kg/h) at 10.34 Barg, and efficiencies of up to 84%. Full steam output is available from a cold start within 20 minutes, meaning that Classic steam boilers can meet the rapid steam requirements for numerous applications – including pharmaceutical, healthcare, and food and beverage.
Fulton said: “Classic uses proven technology to deliver steam economically, while maintaining the rugged, robust, and reliable operation expected from a Fulton heat transfer solution. The pressure vessel is no less than 8 mm thick, and the Classic’s industry-leading vertical design eliminates tubes or coils that are subject to oxygen pitting, corrosion, and burn-out, ensuring decades of trouble-free operation.”
